Add Variable to Claude once as a custom connector, and it’s available in every Claude app you sign in to — claude.ai, Claude Desktop, and the mobile apps.

Before you start

  • MCP is enabled for your Variable account. Check the MCP URL row in Company settings. If it shows Not enabled, email us.

Add the connector

1

Open connector settings

Go to Customize -> Connectors, select + Add, then Add custom connector. If your organization manages connectors centrally, an owner adds it from Organization settings -> Connectors instead: select Add, hover over Custom, and select Web.
2

Enter Variable's details

Name the connector Variable, enter https://app.variable.global/mcp as the URL, and select Continue. Keep the authentication settings Claude detects and select Continue again.
3

Choose how people sign in

Variable registers each client automatically and doesn’t issue client secrets, so Register automatically is the option that works. Select Add.
4

Connect your Variable account

If an owner added Variable for your organization, go to Customize -> Connectors, find Variable (labelled Custom), and select Connect. Otherwise, Claude asks you to sign in the first time it calls Variable.A Variable sign-in window opens: sign in, pick the account to connect, and select Allow.

Use it in a conversation

Connectors are switched on per conversation. Select the + button at the lower left of the chat, open Connectors, and turn on Variable. Then try “list my Variable accounts”. Claude asks before it calls a tool. Variable’s tools can create, update, and delete data, so choose Allow always only for tools you’re happy for Claude to run without asking. To change the connector’s URL or sign-in settings, remove it from Connectors and add it again.
